Cara Rawlings is Associate Professor of Movement and Acting in The Department of Theatre and Cinema in the School of Performing Arts at Virginia Tech. She was formerly on faculty at the University of Miami where she taught movement, acting, and stage combat. She has worked on over 50 productions in professional and academic theatre in the capacities of Fight Director, Movement and Acting Coach, Director, and Dance Choreographer. Highlights include serving as Fight Director for the National Tour of the new musical, Hinton Battle’s Love Lies produced by Hello Entertainment, producer of Ghost and Spiderman on Broadway; Assistant Fight Director at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival in Shepherdstown, WV; and Movement Consultant for Arena Stage’s production of Mother Courage and Her Children in Washington, D.C. starring Oscar and Tony Award Nominee Kathleen Turner. Ms. Rawlings is a Certified Stage Combat Instructor with the Society of American Fight Directors. As one of only 30 females in the SAFD teaching faculty of 163, she presented her research focused on gender issues in stage combat at the International Conference on Visual and Performing Arts in Athens, Greece in 2011. Ms. Rawlings holds a Master of Fine Arts in Movement Pedagogy from Virginia Commonwealth University. As a movement specialist, she has trained the Virginia Tech mascot, coached law students for trial presentation, and taught young actors who now have careers performing in television and theatre. She has presented workshops in her unique psychophysical approach to movement training and performance at international, national, and regional professional conferences across the U.S. and abroad in Greece and Austria. Ms. Rawlings is a member of the Association of Theatre Movement Educators (ATME), Michael Chekhov Association (MICHA), and Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD) and has served on the boards of Virginia Theatre Association (VTA) and Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC).
