Margarita Blush was born and grew up in Sofia, Bulgaria. In 1994 she received a BFA degree in Acting for Puppet Theatre from the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) in Sofia, Bulgaria. In Bulgaria she was a puppeteer with NATFA, touring in Europe and the U.S. She moved to the U.S. in 1995, where she later became the Outreach Director for the Fort Wayne Dance Collective (FWDC) in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Margarita was also an instructor with FWDC in creative movement, modern dance, puppetry and mask making; and a performer and choreographer for the FWDC Touring Company, which toured regionally and nationally. Margarita returned to Bulgaria for two years (2004-2006) and obtained her MFA degree in Directing for Puppet Theatre from NATFA, where she studied with Prof. Nikolina Georgieva, a world-renowned puppetry director. Margarita moved to Boulder, CO in 2006. From 2007-2009 she worked as the Theatre and Drama Specialist at Ricks Center, a school for gifted children affiliated with the University of Denver. In 2007 Margarita was selected as an Associate Member of the Rocky Mountain Women’s Institute. In Boulder Margarita created two puppet theatre productions: River Story (2008, based on a Bulgarian folk tale) and The Crane Wife (2011, based on a Japanese folk tale). Both shows won the Boulder International Fringe Festival Encore award (2009 and 2013). Margarita also collaborated with puppet theatre artist Betsy Tobin and her Now Or Never Theatre from 2006 - 2013. In August, 2013, Margarita joined the Puppet Arts Program at the University of Connecticut as their new Assistant Professor in Directing and Performance for the Puppet Theatre. Artist Statement I work in the field of puppet and devised theatre as a director, performer and teacher. In my work I blend different forms, such as live acting, shadow theatre, puppetry, masks, movement, music, and singing to produce imaginative, aesthetically pleasing, thought-provoking and deeply meaningful theatre experiences for the audience. Through the creation of new and original work I continue to develop my abilities and aspire for the highest standards. In my artistic career I strive to contribute my knowledge, skills, and passion to the local, national and international theatre community, to collaborate with diverse artists, and to develop, create and produce artistic work of the highest quality. I have been a professional theatre artist for over 17 years - singing, performing, dancing, choreographing, creating, writing and directing numerous original and adapted pieces and plays. I have toured and performed in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Germany, France and the United States. I studied with internationally renowned professionals in the field of puppetry and alternative theatre who ignited in me the desire for relevant and inspired work. My artistic and personal strengths stem from my aspiration for excellence, my ability to give my productions a solid artistic vision, style and aesthetic depth, my talent to bring a team of artists together and to get them invested in a project in a way that everyone is contributing effectively to the overall vision and success of the performance. In addition, my intra- and inter-personal skills allow me to create valuable, long-lasting relationships with my working partners.
