During her university theater training, Sydney experienced, and was captivated by, the Alexander Technique. After completing her BA in theater (U. of Minnesota), Sydney trained as an AT teacher at the American Center for the Alexander Technique (ACAT-West) in San Francisco, CA, where she was certified to teach in 1977 by Frank Ottiwell and Giora Pinkas. She did further study with many of the “first generation teachers”, i.e.., those who trained with FM Alexander himself. Marjorie Barstow had the greatest impact on how Sydney thinks about teaching the Technique.
Sydney continues to teach the AT to people of all walks of life, and in a variety of settings (nationwide) and in her private practice (in Ventura, Thousand Oaks, & Santa Monica, CA).
She also trains AT teachers at the Alexander Training Institute of Los Angeles (www.atinstitutela.com), of which she is a founder (1987), a Director of Training and a Senior Faculty member. Currently she serves as the Board President.
Her professional life has included an active participation in the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT), the largest professional association of certified Alexander Technique teachers in the United States. She served as Chair of the Training Approval Committee, the committee responsible for assessing AT Teacher Training Courses for AmSAT approval and now remains active in the Training Course Directors' Committee.
In collaboration with AmSAT colleague, Kathryn Miranda, she created a series of workshops focusing on play to teach the AT. An off-shoot of this project was the article, “Playing with Principles”, published in the AmSAT Journal, Spring 2016.
The Alexander Technique’s integrated, holistic mind/body learning process supports Sydney both in addressing life’s physical/emotional challenges as well as professionally guiding others to fulfilling, improved movement and health.
